Cake Anyone?

My nephew Derek turned 8 this past week and we celebrated as a family on Sunday. My mom put me in charge of the cake and when I asked Derek what kind of cake he wanted he said he wanted a chocolate Star Wars cake. So I went online to see what I could find that I could actually do. I found a cake that someone had made of Jenga Fett which was perfect, because that was what Derek was last year for Halloween. So here is the finished product.
He really liked it and I think it turned out okay. My nephew Dax says I need to send it in to this website Tiff and I like to look at called Cake Wrecks which usually features cakes that went horribly wrong. He reassured me that it would go in the good cake area because 1) it looks good and 2) it's not a cupcake cake. Hopefully I'll get the chance to decorate more cakes so I can get better at it.

I am impressed. The picture is centered, the writing is centered, and everything is spelled correctly, I think (shouldn't it have been birtday?). And is that RED icing you decorated with? I just keep right on looking for other ideas when I see red icing on a cake. How many bottles of coloring did you use? I have to say though, I think this would have made an awesome carved cake. Maybe you can try that for Dax in a couple of weeks!

I have baked three cakes, decorated two in the last 2½ weeks. One day I'll get around to posting about them, probably in October… One thing I've discovered. Living in Ephraim sucks for cake decorating. Don't have a certain tip? Too bad. Deal with it or make a 2 hour round trip drive to Provo. I just dealt with it!

No fortunately it wasn't red. It was supposed to be a very dark brown, but that was the best I could get it. I need to find a better chart that tells how to make colors better. I am very thankful to have good cake supplies here so when I have to make 2 or 3 trips (sometimes more) I can do it in a short amount of time.
